As a pediatric psychiatrist and writer, I have seen firsthand the struggles that many parents of kids aged 0 to 18 face daily. Consider some of the most recent data on parenting:

  • Over half of parents feel judged for how they parent (Pew Research Center, 2023)

  • Nearly half of millennial parents are experiencing burnout (Lurie Children’s, 2024)

  • 85% of parents believe that social media creates unrealistic expectations of them (Lurie Children’s, 2024)

  • Concerns about their kids’ mental health top the list of worries for parents (Pew Research Center, 2023)

  • 80% of parents think it is essential to discuss mental health concerns and emotional well-being with their kids (Lurie Children’s, 2024)

  • Due to increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide, US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a 53-page advisory in 2021 on the current youth mental health crisis

  • In August 2024, Dr. Murthy also issued a 36-page advisory on the mental health and well-being of parents

The issues are real. We must take care of ourselves to take care of our kids. And whether or not you want to parent your kids in the same way you were raised, every parent I’ve met is hungry for ideas to add to their current parenting style to improve their interactions with their kids and enhance their child’s well-being.
